Tiger Woods won't be participating in Tiger Woods' tournament due to an elbow injury, Rory McIlroy won't be playing, either, and Justin Rose withdrew citing exhaustion after winning the U.S. Open and playing one week later in Connecticut. That leaves the world's top three golfers out of play at Congressional. But there's still a solid field, headlined by Masters champ Adam Scott.

Scott placed third at the AT&T National last year, three strokes off Woods and one behind Bo Van Pelt. He followed that up with a second-place finish at the British Open, although he wouldn't crack through and win a major until Augusta. He hasn't placed higher than 13th in three outings since, but given his strong play last year in Bethesda, he'll be a prime contender.

A fellow Aussie is another likely prime competitor: Jason Day finished just two strokes off Rose at Merion, but is still looking for his second career PGA Tour victory. He also finished in third at the Masters and did well at Congressional last year, finishing in eighth. When Congo held the U.S. Open here in 2011, Day finished second, albeit a great distance behind McIlroy, who was in another flight that week.

After a fourth place finish at the US Open, Hunter Mahan is also one of the big names in the field. He finished eighth last year and second in 2009.

The only person in the field who has won at Congressional is K.J. Choi, who took the inaugural event in 2007. Woods has won twice, and Rose won in 2010, but neither are in the field, obviously. Nick Watney took the 2010 edition of the AT&T National, but that year the event was held at Aronimink Country Club in the Philadelphia suburbs.

Even with the top three absent, this is still the biggest event between the U.S. Open and the British Open. Here's how to watch, whether on your television or at your computer. For years, the narrative surrounding the name Phil Mickelson was always some form of the following question: Will he ever win a major championship? The answer was yes, and Mickelson has gone on to win a total of four major championships in his illustrious career.

The 2013 U.S. Open will be played at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore from June 10-16. Philadelphia last hosted a major championship in 1981, when the U.S. Open was held at Merion. And while it’s taken 32 years for the tournament to return, the timing appears to be pretty good.

U.S. Open Experience at Independence Mall

The History
Merion Golf Club is a historic venue, having hosted 17 USGA championship tournaments since opening in 1896, more than any other course. Merion is where Bobby Jones completed the only grand slam in the history of golf in 1930, when he won the U.S. Amateur Championship after winning the British Open, the British Amateur and the U.S. Open earlier in the same year. No one has ever won all four majors in the same year since. (Although, Tiger Woods came close when he held all four major championships at the same time, only over two calendar years.) Other feats at Merion include Ben Hogan doing this. And Jack Nicklaus has said of Merion, “Acre for acre, it may be the best test of golf in the world.”

2013 marks the sixth U.S. Open Championship to be held at Merion and the first since 1981.

The Field
Another thing we have going for us this year is some of the world’s best golfers are heating up just in time for the Open’s return to Merion.

A resurgent Tiger Woods appears to have regained his old form. He’s played in seven tournaments in 2013 and has won four of them. He is once again the #1 ranked player in the world, having overtaken Rory McIlroy thanks to the first three of those early season tour wins. That said, Tiger is still sitting on 14 major championships in his career, having not won a major since 2008. In steadfast pursuit of Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major victories, Tiger is eager to break his four-year drought in the majors. Tiger looks like he’s primed for a big year in 2013 and will surely be gunning for a win at Merion in June. Tiger would love to win an open on the same fabled course where Ben Hogan and Bobby Jones have two of the most famous victories in golf.

So would Phil. Phil Mickelson, Tiger’s longtime rival, has also had a solid start to his 2013 campaign, winning one tournament and finishing with a couple top 10s. Currently the 10th ranked player in the world, Phil has won four majors in his hall-of-fame career, but never a U.S. Open. He’s finished runner-up at the U.S. Open a record five times. Phil really, really wants to win a U.S. Open — could this be his year? We think he can definitely make a solid run at it.

And then there’s Rory McIroy, the #2-ranked, 23-year old phenom who shattered records on his way to his first U.S. Open victory in 2011. Rory is off to a bit of a slower start this year, but it’s a good bet that he straightens things out soon.

Right now things are looking good for Merion to play host to a pretty great (and potentially epic) U.S. Open golf tournament.

And it will be right here in our backyard.

Tickets
One of the reasons Merion hasn’t hosted a Open Championship in 32 years is because the course and its grounds are smaller than many Open courses — in fact, Merion was recently lengthened to 6,846 yards from 6500 yards in order to host this year’s tournament. And the smaller grounds mean smaller gallery sizes and less tickets available each day of the championship.

The good news, however, is that there are still tickets available. Open tickets at Merion are hot commodity, with a lot of the tickets having sold out almost a year in advance. A limited number of individual tickets remain available for purchase through the USGA, both for the practice rounds Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday as well as for the Championship rounds Thursday through Sunday. Stubhub is another option.

But our main point is this: consider it a pretty solid investment. It’s basically a once in a lifetime opportunity to see Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy all tee it up in a U.S. Open Championship at one of the most revered golf courses in the world — Merion, a place that hasn’t seen a major in three decades and that probably won’t see another one for at least one more decade — which just happens to be in Philadelphia’s backyard.

Tiger just sailed his tee shot on the first tee to the right, his opening shot of the tournament coming to rest in a fairway bunker. If he were like most amateurs, that might the a sign of a long day ahead. Somehow I don't think Tiger is wired that way.

All we've been hearing is how much Lee Westwood has worked on his chipping and putting and how much that aspect of his game has approved. He just managed to misread a long eagle putt on the second hole by 10 feet left. And then he lipped out the birdie putt.

What a disaster for Gonzalo Fdez-Castano on the par three 13th hole. He missed the green on the right and was 30 feet from the hole. He chipped it over the green into the water, dropped, hit another into the water, redropped farther from the hole and eventually made an 8! Say hello to the TPC Gonzalo!

So much for the stat about Rory McIlroy having never broken par at the TPC Sawgrass. He's broken it sufficiently today to be just three shots behind Castro with one hole to play. But let's not get carried away and start yelling "Rory's back!" It's only Thursday.

[~*~] The Masters Tournament  2013 Live Official Update!
While not technically impossible, in a traditional sense you cannot have a Masters Tournament without a Par 3 Contest. The now 53-year-old tradition will continue on Wednesday in the final event before the tournament begins on Thursday.

The Par 3 Contest, which has been held since 1960, includes a field of Masters participants, past champions and other invited players. Players will play nine holes which range from 70 to 140 yards in length. No player has ever won the Par 3 Contest and the Masters in the same year. Rory McIlroy will be among the field this year and he will be joined by his girlfriend, who will serve as his caddie.

While the event is fun for players and fans, there will also be some excellent display of skill. According to Masters.com, 75 holes-in-one have been made in the event.


Those unable to attend in person will have multiple viewing options. ESPN will broadcast two hours of coverage from 3 to 5 p.m. ET. Fans will also be able to stream the event online at either Masters.com or WatchESPN.com. Because it's an informal event, there are no official tee times for the par-3 contest but the biggest names will be out on Augusta's par-3 course during ESPN's coverage.


As the golf world collectively salivates in expectation of the 2013 Masters Tournament, it's time to rank the top 25 golfers. This isn't necessarily a regurgitation of betting odds or the eternally maligned official world golf rankings; it's an installment in Bleacher Report's PGA Tour rankings entering golf's rite of spring.
